According to the SGI license agreement, it is not legal for anyone
other than SGI or an SGI VAR to sell
Irix separately. It can be transferred with a system purchase.
Irix media (CDROM discs) can be purchased from Reputable Systems
with a system purchase only. Some of the machines we sell
include Irix media, please read the listing for details.
If you obtain Irix media with a system from Reputable Systems,
you can load the media that came with the system onto a machine you already
own (if it is licensed for that particular version of Irix).
There are no nodelocks or license keys required for the basic Irix
installation.
You can download the Irix 6.5 maintenance release updates from
this link at SGI's website at no charge.
The Irix 6.5 sets available for purchase with a system are complete sets,
including the Foundation 1 and 2 discs, the Developer's Foundation,
the Developer's Libraries, ONC3/NFS, Documentation disc, and other discs.
SGI sells what they call the AWE6.5 which is the advanced workstation
environment (Irix) version 6.5.x for around US$600.00 without a
service contract, or around US$180.00 if you purchase a year's
support contract on your system. Note that SGI may charge you
to come out and inspect the system prior to starting a hardware
support contract. This may or may not be such a good deal, as
you may be able to pick up an entire used system for less than the
price of a year's worth of SGI support.
There also seems to be a tremendous market for illegal copies of
Irix on ebay, if you're feeling lucky. SGI sells directly on ebay as well, so SGI
apparently looks the other way when it comes to the buying and
selling of Irix media.
Reputable Systems will not sell Irix media separately (without a system purchase).
Did you get a good deal on your new system?
